UKRAINE OPENED 'MACEDONIAN' (note; SLAVONIC, NOT THE GREEK!) LANGUAGE PROGRAMM

UKRAINE OPENED '
MACEDONIAN' (note;SLAVONIC, NOT THE GREEK!)) LANGUAGE PROGRAMM
Macedonia (note;THE REPUBLIC, NOT GREECE!) is a small country that has a great name, which sometimes is more popular than necessary, and has been enjoying Ukraine's support in principle of its constitutional name for the last 13 years since the establishment of the diplomatic ties, Foreign Minister Antonio Milososki said Wednesday in his address before students at the Kyiv Slavonic University.
The two countries, which have been nourishing close relations, are being connected by common cultural values, similar fate in terms of the struggle for independence and aspirations for becoming part of the Euro-Atlantic institutions, which may further develop their ties to the level of bilateral alliance, Milosoki said.
Today, Milosoki has become an honorary PhD of the Kyiv Slavonic University. Late Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski and Academician Nikola Kljusev were also recepients of this title.
Within the observance of 2008- the Year of Macedonian language, the Kyiv Slavonic University opened a Macedonian language program within its Department for Slavic Languages on an initiative of the Ukrainian Embassy in Macedonia.
Milosoki's working visit to Ukraine kicks off tomorrow. Besides meeting with his host Volodymyr Ohryzko, Milososki is to hold talks with President Viktor Yushchenko and Parliament Speaker Arseniy Yatsenyuk.
Milososki and Ohryzko will sign a Programme for cooperation between the countries' foreign ministries.
Milososki will also lay flowers at the monument of the 1932-33 Ukraine Famine (Holodomor) victims.
Note of the blogger; They admit that the so called ''macedonian language'' is slavonic, but they insist not to call it ''slavomacedonian'' in order to confuse it with the 'macedonian idiom' that is Greek!!!
LET'S START A SERIOUS AND HONEST DIALOGUE!!!
A Slavonic language, as Officials confirm, but intentionally are calling 'macedonian' instead of 'slavomacedonian', in order to confuse it with the macedonian idiom that was and is Greek!
The Country's aggressive nationalism, is creating serious troubles in the balkan area, with the support of the administration Bush (for they want to create a protectoratum in order to control the balkan area!).
It would be so clear to find an honest compromise with Greece, admiting oppenly the 'slavomacedonian' name for the people that grew up and lived in the historical region of Macedonia, as identity - language and a name as 'Upper Macedonia'' for the state, so to include also the albanians - bulgari - serbs - turks - greeks - roma ect. and respect the Greek historical name and the greek macedonians.
Playing the game of the Bush administration could gain a worst future for the country and permit fascism and ultranationalist elements to control it.
A serious and honnest compromise, respecting the history of Greece and of the Balkans would be; 'UPPERMACEDONIA' with a SLAVOMACEDONIAN IDENTITY and LANGUAGE!
This would be the identity of the slavic tribes that came in the region after the 5th century and in the 20th century wants to be called a slavic macedonian nation.
Skopia and Greece could proceed faster in a friendly cooperation excluding countries that the only thing they are looking is to CONTROL!

Επιτέλους, οι ελληνικές θέσεις στον Αμερικανικό τύπο, σήμερα
Enhancing and preserving the hard-won stability of the Balkans requires that Washington not become complacent about remaining irredentist agendas in this complex region. This should be Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's focus when she is in New York this week at the convening of the United Nations General Assembly with the foreign ministers of Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
In 1944, Secretary of State Edward Stettinius expressed concerns about Yugoslavian communist leader Josip Broz Tito creating a "Macedonian" province and consciousness among his people. Stettinius saw the destructive potential in Tito's choice of a name describing an ancient geographical area, 52 percent of which is located in modern Greece, 9 percent in Bulgaria and 39 percent in Yugoslavia. His description of Tito's actions as "a possible cloak for aggressive intentions against Greece" manifested years later when Tito's "Macedonians" crossed into Greece as participants in Greece's anti-communist civil war (1946-49).
Nearly half a century later, that Yugoslavian province became an independent nation in 1991 identified by the United Nations and internationally as the "Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" or "FYROM." Yet Tito's furtive aims live on in many ways, including the nation's pursuit of the name "Macedonia." Its new constitution called on all "Macedonians" in neighboring countries to rise up and unite. In addition, FYROM printed currency featuring the White Tower of Salonika (Thessaloniki), Greece, and created a flag featuring the Macedonian symbol from the dynasty of Philip of Macedon and his son Alexander the Great, which was located in Greece.
Years of productive U.S. and U.N. diplomacy moved FYROM to drop the offending language from its constitution and symbols from its currency and flag. Many believed FYROM was moving toward adopting a name such as "North Macedonia" or "Upper Macedonia" which appropriately describes its own geography.
However in 2004, the administration disregarded possible long-term consequences and focused exclusively on short-term intra-FYROM political goals. It split from U.N., NATO and EU policies to recognize FYROM as the "Republic of Macedonia" in a misguided attempt to provide cover to Western-oriented leaders in an intensely nationalistic political environment. This sudden about-face undermined international efforts to solve the name issue, and emboldened those within FYROM opposed to a diplomatic solution.
Shortly thereafter, a videotape surfaced showing FYROM's state schools teaching that northern Greece is FYROM territory occupied by Greece. Maps showing northern Greece as part of FYROM also appeared in school textbooks and one was recently displayed behind Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski at a ceremony. Most recently the political leadership in Skopje launched an unprecedented campaign of claims against Greece, thus undermining the ongoing talks under United Nations auspices.
Due to FYROM's intransigence on the name dispute, it was prohibited from joining NATO at the group's April summit, thus thwarting American security interests. In Bucharest, NATO leaders unanimously decided that an invitation to FYROM will be extended as soon as a mutually acceptable solution to the name issue has been reached. In breaking with the international community on FYROM's name and failing to condemn its provocations, the U.S. administration bolstered FYROM's intransigence and inadvertently contributed to the deadlock in NATO.
To correct this, we recently requested clarification on the administration's position on this issue. The State Department responded with a letter that stated, "Our ambassador [to FYROM] will, as well, help these leaders understand the dangers of irredentism in any form and the importance of avoiding the implications of irredentism in any form."
From our perspective, this was an improvement on the U.S. position. Yet when this language from the letter was recently read aloud at a State Department briefing, the department's spokesman indicated its position on the issue had not changed. We strongly believe it would be an error to eschew progress on this issue at the very moment it is most required.
Miss Rice has an ideal opportunity in New York to demonstrate America's opposition to any form of irredentism in FYROM and resolve the question of accession to NATO. She can tell FYROM that unless it accepts an international name that describes only its territory, such as "North" or "Upper" Macedonia, to be also used in the bilateral relations with the United States, by a time certain, the U.S. will withdraw bilateral recognition of FYROM as "Republic of Macedonia."
She can thus regenerate the American pressure necessary to resolve the problem, avoid sowing the seeds of another potential conflict in Europe and open the door for FYROM's accession to the European Union and NATO. This requires engagement, leadership and proactive diplomacy. Such a solution will have bipartisan support in the Congress.
Bob Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat, and Olympia J. Snowe, a Maine Republican, are members of the United States Senate.

EARLY ELECTIONS IN PSEUDOMACEDONIA IN JUNE

EARLY ELECTIONS IN JUNE
National.
Early elections will be definitely held in (Pseudo)Macedonia in early June.
The parliament is due to adopt the formal decision today, which already demonstrated consensus to call for snap polls.
The lawmakers unanimously decided to extend the session - which has been repeatedly adjourned - until the final decision is made.
The course of the parliamentary debate indicates that the pre-election campaign has already started.
Although the MPs belonging to opposition parties confirmed they would back the motion for holding early elections, they accused the ruling VMRO DPMNE of trying to leave space for election forgeries by refusing to specify the electoral rules.
VMRO DPMNE rejected the allegations, describing them as an attempt to block the parliament's activities.
The international community signaled that the snap polls - the first in the history of (Pseudo)Macedonia - may put off the invitation for membership in NATO and start of the (17years history) accession talks with EU.
FYROM WILL CONTINUE THE TALKS ON THE NAME ISSUE

PSEUDO'MACEDONIA' TO CONTINUE THE TALKS
National.
PSEUDO'Macedonia' stands ready to resume the talks with Greece in order to reach a mutually acceptable compromise on the name issue, which would not endanger its identity.
PSEUDO'Macedonian' President Branko Crvenkovski stated this today during a meeting with the visiting US Permanent Representative to NATO, Victoria Nuland, his Cabinet announced.
"The compromise should enable integration in NATO and start of accession talks with EU, but it should by no means bring into question the national cultural and linguistic identity," the announcement says.
Ambassador Nuland on her part conveyed that the incumbent US Administration is fully committed to support PSEUDO'Macedonia's' efforts toward integration in the Euro-Atlantic structures.
She also stressed the importance of PSEUDO'Macedonia's' active participation in the negotiating process under UN auspice.
President Crvenkovski also held talks today with the Director of the General Secretariat with the Council of the European Union, Stefan Lehne, which were focused on the current political situation in the country.
"Lehne said that PSEUDO'Macedonia' should define its priorities and raised concerns that the initiatives for holding early elections might stall Euro-Atlantic processes of the country," the Cabinet of President Crvenkovski announced.
MD: This is wrong by the 'PSEUDOMacedonian' government, they should not continue the talks after the veto was issued. But of course the government is under huge international pressure.
SKOPIANS WALK OUT OF NATO SUMMIT AFTER REJECTION
Πέμπτη, 3 Απριλίου 2008 10:39 μμ |
From Slavic macedoniadaily.org
National.
'Macedonia's' delegation walked out of a NATO summit in Bucharest on Thursday after Greece refused to let it join the alliance. "The 'Macedonian' delegation will leave because we feel the need to be with our people ... Greece's irrelevant argument won over the serious needs of the (Western Balkan) region," Foreign Minister Antonio Milososki said.
"Today marks the day of defeat of the NATO's principles of freedom, democracy and open-doors policy. The defeat did not took place on the field, where the 'Macedonian' soldiers participate in the Alliance's missions shoulder to shoulder with the troops of the other NATO members, but at a table in Bucharest," Milososki added.
According to him, 'Macedonia' will re-evaluate the Interim Accord with Greece, which is seriously violated by the veto.
The NATO debacle now threatens to derail the negotiating process, with Milososki saying that the Greek veto is a "direct breach" of an interim accord signed between the sides in September 1995, and the 'Macedonian' government "will have to reconsider" its entire approach to the name negotiations.
"Our country is the Republic of 'Macedonia', and it will remain so for ever," he said.
That appears to leave little room for compromise, or for a rapid NATO accession for 'Macedonia', since Greece is already a member of the body and therefore has veto rights over its future membership.
"All NATO countries except Greece are favourable and supportive" of 'Macedonia's' accession, but the question of how the alliance should act now "is a matter for NATO," Milososki said.
MD: This is a black day for 'Macedonia' but also for NATO and the Balkans, good thing the Macedonians left the summit and did not bend in front of the Greeks and their pressure! Greek media are celebrating the decision, writing "Karamanlis triumph" in the headlines.
USA TO GUARANTEE MACEDONIAN SECURITY
Πέμπτη, 3 Απριλίου 2008 10:32 μμ |
FROM: Slavic macedoniadaily.org
National.
FyroMacedonia and USA will sign within the next two weeks a special bilateral agreement under which Washington will undertake to guarantee FyroMacedonia's security.
To this end, FyroMacedonian Foreign Minister Antonio Milososki will travel to U.S. soon, to work out the details of the agreement.
The decision for signing of such an agreement came after NATO did not invite Macedonia to join the Alliance along with Albania and Croatia.
Macedonia was not granted an invitation because of the Greece's veto. This country remained steadfastly on the position that although Macedonia fulfilled all conditions for membership, it still has to solve the name issue.
A LETTER TO US AMBASSADOR, RICHARD HOLBROOK FOR FYROM ISSUE
Δευτέρα, 10 Μαρτίου 2008 11:25 πμ |
The letter of the Pan-Macedonian association of the
USA to Mr. Richard Holbrook
March 6, 2002
Honorable Ambassador Richard Holbrooke
Perseus Company
888 7th Avenue, 29th Floor
New York, N.Y. 10106
Hon. Amb. R. Holbrooke:
It has been several years since I first met you in Washington, D.C. during the Annual Hellenic Leadership Conference, organized by Andy and Mike Manatos under the auspices of PSEKA, S.A.E. and the Coordinated Efforts of Hellenes (CEH). At that time you were serving as the Special Emissary for the Cyprus Issue working closely with Ambassador T. Miller.
As I recall we all admired your knowledge, your sincerity, and your objectivity. However, I have to admit we were all very disappointed and very concerned about your statements during your recent lecture at the Johns Hopkins University in Washington, D.C., in which, according to Skopje's newspaper, "Outrinski Besnik", as you were portraying the present situation in Bosnia, FYROM and Kosovo, you urged Greece to recognize FYROM under its constitutional name "Macedonia". When then you were asked how FYROM's people should be called, you simply replied "Macedonians".
On behalf of the members of the reputable Greek Organization, "Pan-Macedonian Association USA", which is in existence for 56 active years, I would like to express my grave concern for all the thousands of true Makedonians, about the recent activity regarding the permanent name for FYROM, and the effusive rumors regarding a settlement with the use of an adjectival or regional defining which includes the term "Macedonia". How sad to have such a considerable misinformation circulating through pamphlets, maps handbooks, the American media and even within the US Department of Defense, regarding the true ethnicity and language of the Slavic people who are inhabiting FYROM and want to be called "Macedonians". Of course, as Dr. Henry Kissinger has repeatedly stated, "who ever knows history, knows that the rights are with Greece although Greece took its rights for granted and did not utilize its biggest weapon properly, which is called History".
Honorable Ambassador, for you and the Governments of the World the issue might be Political. However, for us, the true Makedonians, the matter is Cultural, Historical and Ethnic. It is a matter of our Ethnic identity, which cannot be negotiated, and it is our Heritage which cannot be spared.
Regarding the ethnicity and the language of the inhabitants of FYROM, it should be brought to your attention, that there are three statements, which indisputably prove that they are Slavs and a fourth statement that attests to the threat of the name they wish to retain. The only ones who believe they are descendants of the ancient Makedonians are the ones who received the "high education" from the Titoic School of History under the auspices of the Communist Yugoslavia. The statements are as follows:
1. February 26 1992: FYROM's President Gligorov at a interview reported by the Foreign Information Service, Daily Report, Eastern Europe stated: "We are Slavs, who came to this region in the sixth century. We are not descendants of the ancient Macedonians."
2. January 22 1999: FYROM's Ambassador in Washington, Mrs. Ljubica Acevshka, gave a speech on the present situation in the Balkans. At the end of her speech answering questions Mrs. Acevshka said: "We do not claim to be descendants of Alexander the Great. Greece is FYROM's second largest trading partner, and its number one investor. Instead of opting for war, we have chosen the mediation of the United Nations, with talks on the ambassadorial level under Mr. Vance and Mr. Nemitz." In reply to another question about the ethnic origin of the people of FYROM, Ambassador Achevska stated that "we are Slavs and we speak a Slav language."
3. February 24 1999: In an interview with the Ottawa Citizen, Gyordan Veselinov, FYROM's Ambassador to Canada, he admitted, "We are not related to the northern Greeks who produced leaders like Philip and Alexander the Great. We are Slav people and our language is closely related to Bulgarian." He also commented "there is some confusion about the identity of the people of this country."
4. U.S. State Department, Foreign Relations Vol. VII, Circular Airgram (868.014 / 26 Dec. 1944) by then Secretary of State E. Stettinius: "The Department has noted with considerable apprehension increasing propaganda rumors and semi-official statements in favor of an autonomous Macedonia emanating from Bulgaria, but also from Yugoslav Partisan and other sources, with the implication that Greek territory would be included in the projected state. "This Government considers talk of Macedonian "nation", Macedonian "Fatherland" or Macedonian "national consciousness" to be unjustified demagoguery representing no ethnic or political reality, and sees in its present revival a possible cloak for aggressive intentions against Greece".
As we all know our problem is stemming from the action of Dictator [Josip Broz] Marshal Tito who in 1944 as a move fitting his territorial ambition, created the "Socialist Republic of Macedonia" which until then was called Vardarska Banjovina. He then began a guerilla war aided by neighboring Communist countries whose goal was the capture of Northern Greece and have easy access to the Aegean Sea.
Dear Mr. Ambassador in the name of Justice, objectivity, credibility and Historical truth, in order for you to maintain your integrity and prestige, we are kindly requesting to correct your statements to the above discussed newspaper or elsewhere. The final chosen name for FYROM has to differentiate them from us, the direct descendants of the Greek Kingdom of Macedonia, which in Ancient times spread Hellenism around the World and pre-existed by 1,000 years the appearance of the Slavic elements in the region (700 A.D.)
Your understanding, your support, and a reply will be greatly appreciated
Very Sincerely,
Nina Peropoulos, Supreme President

Protest to the Canadian History Television
The Canadian History Television recently created a feature for Alexander the Great which amongst other information contains a quiz with question about the life of Alexander. The first question of this quiz feature the question "What nationality was Alexander the Great?" and it appears that "Macedonian" is accepted as the correct answer although one of the other options is "Greek".
(Link : http://www.historytelevision.ca/quizzes/alexandertheGreat/)
This is a very serious mistake which distorts the history of Macedonia. It is well known that the ancient Macedonians were not a separate ethnic group.
We must all protest to the Canadian History Television about this inaccurate quiz.

INTERNATIONAL HERALD TRIBUNE, ON FYROM'S NATO ISSUE
Παρασκευή, 7 Μαρτίου 2008 2:49 μμ |
...
Rice spent a day at NATO headquarters holding talks on everything from Greece's refusal to let the former Yugoslav republic of ''Macedonia'' have full membership to whether letting Georgia and Ukraine join is a good idea in light of Russia's opposition.
...
Rice also found herself in the midst of detailed talks about which European countries should be allowed into NATO, and when. Greece threatened to block NATO membership for ''Macedonia'', saying it would wield its veto next month unless the country changes its name from Republic of ''Macedonia''. Greece says that name implies a territorial claim on the Greek province of Macedonia.
Rice said that all sides were trying to figure out a solution. Other officials said that in a fight between one NATO ally (Greece) and non-ally (''Macedonia''), the non-ally would probably lose.

''Macedonia'!' urged today for quick start of the process of demarcation of the northern border in the part towards Kosovo.
"A request has been sent to the competent institutions of Kosovo for establishing a joint panel tasked to carry out demarcation of the shared borderline," government's spokesman Ivica Bocevski said in a written statement.
The statement further says that the joint panel should work on demarcation of the border "in line with the 2001 International Agreement and within the deadlines set in the Martti Ahtisaari's plan."
MD: ''Macedonia''! was hoping to settle this issue before Kosovo declaring independence by talking with the Serbian authorities, but over the years it has lead to nothing.
SENATE OF THE USA RESOLUTION SIGNED BY OBAMA!

Expressing the sense of the Senate that the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) should stop the utilization of materials that violate provisions of the United Nations-brokered... (Introduced in Senate)
SRES 300 IS
110th CONGRESS
1st Session
S. RES. 300
Expressing the sense of the Senate that the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) should stop the utilization of materials that violate provisions of the United Nations-brokered Interim Agreement between FYROM and Greece regarding `hostile activities or propaganda' and should work with the United Nations and Greece to achieve longstanding United States and United Nations policy goals of finding a mutually-acceptable official name for FYROM.
IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES
August 3, 2007
Mr. MENENDEZ (for himself, Ms. SNOWE, and Mr. OBAMA) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the Committee on Foreign Relations
RESOLUTION
Expressing the sense of the Senate that the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) should stop the utilization of materials that violate provisions of the United Nations-brokered Interim Agreement between FYROM and Greece regarding `hostile activities or propaganda' and should work with the United Nations and Greece to achieve longstanding United States and United Nations policy goals of finding a mutually-acceptable official name for FYROM.
Whereas, on April 8, 1993, the United Nations General Assembly admitted as a member the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), under the name the `Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia';
Whereas United Nations Security Council Resolution 817 (1993) states that the dispute over the name must be resolved to maintain peaceful relations between Greece and FYROM;
Whereas, on September 13, 1995, Greece and FYROM signed a United Nations-brokered Interim Accord that, among other things, commits them to not `support claims to any part of the territory of the other party or claims for a change of their existing frontiers';
Whereas a pre-eminent goal of the United Nations Interim Accord was to stop FYROM from utilizing, since its admittance to the United Nations in 1993, what the Accord calls `propaganda', including in school textbooks;
Whereas a television report in recent years showed students in a state-run school in FYROM still being taught that parts of Greece, including Greek Macedonia, are rightfully part of FYROM;
Whereas some textbooks, including the Military Academy textbook published in 2004 by the Military Academy `General Mihailo Apostolski' in the FYROM capital city, contain maps showing that a `Greater Macedonia' extends many miles south into Greece to Mount Olympus and miles east to Mount Pirin in Bulgaria;
Whereas, in direct contradiction of the spirit of the United Nations Interim Accord's section `A', entitled `Friendly Relations and Confidence Building Measures', which attempts to eliminate challenges regarding `historic and cultural patrimony', the Government of FYROM recently renamed the capital city's international airport `Alexander the Great Airport';
Whereas the aforementioned acts constitute a breach of FYROM's international obligations deriving from the spirit of the United Nations Interim Accord, which provide that FYROM should abstain from any form of `propaganda' against Greece's historical or cultural heritage;
Whereas such acts are not compatible with Article 10 of the United Nations Interim Accord, which calls for `improving understanding and good neighbourly relations', as well as with European standards and values endorsed by European Union member-states; and
Whereas this information, like that exposed in the media report and elsewhere, being used contrary to the United Nations Interim Accord instills hostility and a rationale for irredentism in portions of the population of FYROM toward Greece and the history of Greece: Now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the Senate--
(1) urges the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) to observe its obligations under Article 7 of the 1995 United Nations-brokered Interim Accord, which directs the parties to `promptly take effective measures to prohibit hostile activities or propaganda by state-controlled agencies and to discourage acts by private entities likely to incite violence, hatred or hostility' and review the contents of textbooks, maps, and teaching aids to ensure that such tools are stating accurate information; and
(2) urges FYROM to work with Greece within the framework of the United Nations process to achieve longstanding United States and United Nations policy goals by reaching a mutually-acceptable official name for FYROM.
OPEN LETTER TO CONDOLEEZZA RICE, U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE
Δευτέρα, 25 Φεβρουαρίου 2008 11:10 μμ |
http://www.panmacedonian.info/
OPEN LETTER TO THE HONORABLE CONDOLEEZZA RICE, U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE
Re: Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia
Dear Madame Secretary:
On behalf of the nation-wide membership of the undersigned organizations we write to you to express our strong concerns regarding the administration's continuing failure to properly address the name issue regarding the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) as it relates to our interests and that of our most important ally in the BalkansGreece.
The U.S. has important interests in Southeast Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. The projection of U.S. interests in the region depends heavily on the stability of the region. Therefore, the U.S. has an important stake in fostering good relations among neighboring countries in the region.
To this effect, Greece is of vital importance in the region by virtue of among other factors, its geographic location and by being home to the most important naval base in the Mediterranean Sea, Souda Bay, Crete. There are thousands of visits by U.S. military ships and planes to Souda Bay and its adjacent air base annually.
This sentiment has been expressed several times by our government in the past few years, by President Bush and by you, Madame Secretary.
Stability in the Balkans is not only critical for overall U.S. interests, but also because it serves the interests of every country in the Balkans.
Greece is by far the most stable country, politically and economically, in the Balkans and the biggest investor with over 22 billions dollars. By contrast, FYROM is of limited significance to the national security interests of the United States.
Yet, FYROM continues to provoke Greece, usurping history which has been Hellenic for thousands of years, while FYROM refuses to negotiate in good faith over the name issue. Unfortunately, actions over the years such as distortion of geographic maps, naming its airport "Alexander the Great," revisionist textbooks in schools, and inflammatory comments by top government officials, encourages new generations in FYROM to cultivate hostile sentiments against Greece. Further, this continuing systematic government policy will hinder FYROM's accession to both the EU and NATO. This is the real threat to stability in the Balkans, to the detriment of U.S. interests.
We wish to remind you that currently there are over 100 members of the Congress who have signed onto H.Res. 356, calling on FYROM to cease it "hostile activities or propaganda" against Greece.
As you prepare to meet today with Greece's Foreign Minister, Dora Bakoyianni, we know that a main topic on the agenda will be the FYROM name issue and how this continuing unresolved issue threatens the forthcoming expected application of FYROM to join NATO. Since this issue first arose back in the year 1991-1992 the Greek American community has been against a permanent name for the neighboring state which would include the name Macedonia/Macedonian. The U.S. supports FYROM's admission to NATO. Greece obviously objects to admission without a resolution to the name issue, and has stated it will use their veto, if necessary, which Greece is within her rights to exercise.
The immediate settlement of the name issue, in a way that is acceptable to Greece, will allow the United States' strongest ally in the Balkans to be the driving force for FYROM's membership to NATO and ultimately to the European Union.
FYROM's "passport" to NATO and the European Union is Greece.
Therefore, we call upon you, Madame Secretary, to please use your influence with FYROM to impress upon them to negotiate in good faith with Greece to resolve the name issue that would clearly differentiate that country from, Macedonia the northern province of Greece and its Hellenic history and for FYROM to cease immediately their irredentist propaganda against Greece, which violates the UN-brokered Interim Accord, as stated in Article 7 paragraph 1 of the Accord, signed in New York on September 13 1995 between FYROM and Greece. Only in this way will the interests of all parties be satisfied.
We write to you in the interests of the United States and for the support of our long-time and loyal ally Greece, who is our most important strategic partner in the region and the key country for stability in the region.
Respectfully yours,
