My Greek DNA Beats Yours

Dear U of U: You don't have to be born in Greece to be a Greek.

By John Saltas

A couple of years ago, I and other family members traced our DNA through FamilyTree.com. My DNAso that of my father, his Greek father and so ontested into Haplogroup R1a1, meaning our Y chromosomes have been wandering around central Europe since at least the time of the last Ice Age. My mother';s Cretan father (tested via a male cousin born to my mother';s brother) was shown to be a member of Haplogroup J2. That group is found throughout the ancient seafaring regions of the eastern Mediterranean. Landing there perhaps thanks to the Phoenicians, J2 is prevalent on the island of Crete, and it dates at least to the Minoan era.

That means distant male relatives of mine have been traipsing on or around the Greek homelands for thousands of years. During those millennia, the great power Macedon arose in what is now northern Greece and gave history two great leaders: Phillip II and his son, Alexander the Great, who conquered the world.

When he did so, he used some of those J2 DNA Cretans as archers in his army. Given the prevalence of R1a1 DNA throughout the Balkans, I can easily imagine that somebody in my bloodline helped Alexander ride into history. As such, I';m more than interested in the current tensions in that region between Greece and its neighbor to the north.

Macedonia is the northernmost Greek province, spreading vastly outward from the main port city of Thessaloniki. In recent decades, the southernmost republic of what was once called Yugoslavia southern Serbia in factmagically began calling itself Macedonia, too. The two Macedonias border each other. Imagine if someone decided to change the name of northern Mexico to Texas. Texans would be pissed. Well, Greeks are pissed.

Some very passionateor crazyscholars argue about who is the more rightful heir to the name Macedonia. It';s an important issue because the Republic of Macedonia (a name barely recognized even beyond Greecemaps refer to it as FYROM, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) is seeking admission into the European Union. It';s a silly point. You can';t have two places of the same name bordering each other. Greece wins. They had it first and longest. Period.

The Greek region of Macedonia comprises over 75 percent of what was the former Macedonia, including the Macedonian cities of Pella, Vergina and Thessaloniki. The capital of FYROM is Skopje, which lies beyond the borders of ancient Macedon. That';s easily explained if you have lots of time, but basically, say thanks to Yugoslav leader Josip Tito (who promoted the name Macedonia in southern Serbia while aspiring to extend his domain through Greece to the warm port city of Thessaloniki); Communist insurgencies; plus Greek, Bulgarian, Serbian and Albanian conquests, among others.

If you think Mormons and non-Mormons fight a lot and say nasty things to one another, you need to check out what the people supporting FYROM are saying about the Greeks. And what the Greeks are saying back. Greeks living in the northern provinces suffered terribly during the civil war that followed World War II while rejecting their own Communist uprising that consumed countries to their north. Thousands were slaughtered by the Bulgarians who also have eyes on Macedonia. For Greeks, it';s not merely an ancient name they lay claim to but their very heritagethey would live in freedom or die fighting for it. Since they live on the best lands of ancient Macedon, they';ve been run over more than a BYU defensive back. Both sides fought dirty; both can point to atrocities by the other. You can easily discover if the Greeks were protecting their historic homelands or expanding their influence into the Tito';s cabbage patches.

The argument distills around whether ancient Macedonia was ever Greekor, correctly, Hellenicin the first place. If those arguing for FYROM claim they are the real ethnic heirs to Macedonia, then they should call up FamilyTree.com and find out. But given just-recent history with so many Albanians, Serbs and Bulgarians moving in and out of there, it would only prove that their slice of ancient Macedonia has new tenants. Hellenism is conceptual, not ethnic, and Greek is a language not an ethnicity. FYROM doesn';t get the concept, but it';s this: You don';t have to be born in Greece to be a Greek.

Alexander is a Greek name. So is Phillip. So is Thessaloniki. So is Bucephalus, the name given Alexander';s ox-headed horse (and, also, trivia nuts, the nickname of Hank "Bocephus" Williams Jr.). Macedon participated in the exclusively Greek ancient Olympic Games. Alexander was tutored by Aristotle, a Greek. Alexander and his Macedonian kingdom were Greek.

This week, the University of Utah is sponsoring the seventh Macedonian-North American Conference on Macedonian Studiesa scholarly attempt to commit national identity theft of the name Macedonia. There will be plenty of fingerpointing going onif Greeks are allowed in to point back, that is. Each side will say they suffered more. Each will say the other is reshaping history. Each will count dead bodies, broken promises and acts of barbarism. And none of that will change the consequence of allowing two states or nations to share the same namemore trouble for that region.

University of Utah President Michael Young is right to allow such free expression on his campus. But Michael Young probably lacks either R1a1 or J2 DNA, too, so he may not understand why Greeks are riled at him. I suspect he';d feel differently if a long-lost cousin of his, maybe a Benjamin Young, started a new university in Orem, called it BYU and began claiming victimization while trashing Brigham Young himself. Yeah, he';s related, and Brigham likely did some awful things in his day, but that wouldn';t mean Michael might not want to wipe Benjamin';s snot off.

Modern 'FYROMacedonians' not sons of Alexander the Great, scholar says

Belgrade/Mannheim - Skopje may continue the already two- decades-long battle over the right to use the name Macedonia, but history is clearly on the side of Athens, a scholar said Friday. At the core of the strife is the national identity of Alexander the Great, the Macedonian conqueror from the 4th century BC.

"Alexander was basically a Greek and in no case a forefather of today's Slavic Macedonians," the director of Reiss-Engelhorn Museum, Alfred Wieczorek, told the German Press Agency dpa. "Macedonians and Greeks understood each others, as they spoke the same language." The exhibition "Alexander the Great and the Opening of the World" opened on Friday at the museum. It offers impressive insight into the short life of one among the ancient world's greatest leaders. Before he died in 323 BC, aged just 32, Alexander stormed the southeastern Mediterranean and sliced through the Persian empire, leaving a massive cultural and historical legacy in his wake. The exhibition in Mannheim, in southern Germany, follows his course to Central Asia and demonstrates the cultural, economical and social upheavals caused by his conquests. Two and a half millenia later, Greece is blocking Macedonia, which emerged as a sovereign state from the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia in 1991, from using that name. Athens insists that only its northern province, Alexander's homeland, has the right to it. Slavs began arriving from Asia in the 6th century, a millenium after Alexander died. These were the predecessors of Slavic Macedonians, who represent a three-quarter majority in the former Yugoslav republic, which has a significant, 25-per cent Albanian minority. Yet contemporary Macedonians claim the heritage of the great king, putting his Star of Vergina on the national flag and naming major buildings and projects, such as the Skopje airport and the key highway, after Alexander. The latest effort aimed at proving relation with Alexander is a plan to put multi-million-dollar statue of him on a prancing horse on the sprawling central square in the capital. All that does not impress Wieczorek. "The latest discoveries clearly prove that Macedonians and Greeks of the Alexander era were closely related," he said.

The row over the name has so far cost Macedonia membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which Greece vetoed last year. It is also hindering the country's closer ties to the EU.

Alfried Wieczorek, Head of German museum says: ALEXANDER the GREAT was mainly GREEK

German_museum_man_021009.jpg

Mannheim, Germany - The head of a German museum which is set to show an exhibition about Alexander the Great weighed into a dispute between Skopje and Athens on Friday, saying the ancient leader had been predominantly Greek. The modern state of Macedonia, where the main language is a Slavic one, claims the heritage of ancient Macedonia.

"Alexander was predominantly Greek and definitely not an ancestor of contemporary Slavic Macedonians," said Alfried Wieczorek, head of the Reiss-Engelhorn Museums in the southern German city of Mannheim.

The exhibition devoted to the ancient general and ruler, who lived from 356 to 323 BC, opens on Saturday and runs till February 21.

For two decades, Athens has been objecting to its northern neighbour calling itself Macedonia. Skopje has named its airport after Alexander and insists on having Alexander's "star of Vergina" symbol on its coat of arms.

In an interview with the German Press Agency dpa, Wieczorek said, "The latest research shows very clearly yet again that the Macedonians in the days of Alexander were closely related to the contemporary Greeks."

He added, "In antiquity, Greeks and Macedonians could interact because they spoke the same language."

Athens has been insisting that the name Macedonia can only been applied to a province in its own north.

The country of Macedonia became independent in 1991 when Yugoslavia split up. The name issue has held up efforts to bring the new country into NATO and into formal assocation with the European Union.

The museum director referred to findings that its population of 2 million, one quarter of them Albanian speakers and three quarters Slavic speakers, are descended from people who immigrated in the 6th century of the modern era, long after Alexander's death.

ALEXANDER THE GREAT

THE FAILURE OF THE GREEK CITIES

...;

THE MACEDONIANS AND PHILIP II

Macedonia, lying across the top of the Hellenic peninsula, had always seemed ''provincial,'' even semibarbaric, to the Hellenes, though the Macedonians were essentially Greek. Macedonia had protected the Greek states to the south from barbarian invasion and in the fourth century became the unifier of the Greeks. Under Alexander's leadership Macedonian-Greek armes extended Hellenic civilization throughout the Eastern Mediterranean basin and beyond. Yet, at the beginning of the fourth century Macedonia seemed to be breaking up. Invaded by barbarians and under pressure from the Greek states to the south, the burdens of external and internal strife helped to create a difficult situation.

When Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great, came to power in 359 matters looked hopeless. Philip was the most extraordinary individual of his age. Within five years he defeated all his enemies and unified the kingdom. He built a fine army and became a major power in the Greek world. Macedonia was a unique state. Though a monarchy, the king's powers were limited by an army assembly and a companion cavalry, the mounted nobility of the realm. The Macedonian king was regarded by the companions as merely first among equals.

When Philip was invited into the political affairs of the traditional Greek cities, he aroused some concern and appeared to many as a threat to their liberties; he was violently opposed by the Athenian orator Demosthenes. By skill at war and diplomacy, however, he moved southward.
After the battle of Chaeronea in 338 in which he defeated Thebes and Athens, he was the master of Greece.

He appears to have thought of himself, however, as a deliverer, rescuing the Greeks from their suicidal rivalries, and as a champion of Hellenism against barbarism.
He convoked assemblies at the Isthmus of Corinth which elected him leader of a new Pan-Hellenic, anti-Persian alliance with mandate to undertake at least a partial conquest of the Persian empire. In 336, however, he was assassinated by a disgruntled Macedonian nobleman.

THE CAREER OF ALEXANDER

...;

THE HELLENIC VIEW OF MAN

The balance of success that attended the Hellenes from Miltiades to Alexander in their confrontation with the more easterly powers of the ancient world ensured that the Hellenic view of man and the universe would not be lost to view but become one of the main threads in the fabric of Western culture. Most simply and broadly, this was the Homeric view of the individual human being as capable in himself of making his own way in a potentially intelligible universe, within his own life span without contingence on anything beyond.
